Listen to the Silence Around You

Silence is not the absence of something. It is already here, under the noise, and you can hear it if you stop trying to make anything of it. Give your attention to silence for one day and see what happens to your peace.

Most of the day you are so deep in the stream of your own thinking that you do not notice silence at all. It is there, in the gap after a car passes, in the room after everyone has left, in the second before you answer a question. But the mind is loud, and silence does not compete. It waits. I want to suggest a single day of noticing it, and I want to be clear about one thing from the start: do not use force. If you try to make silence, the trying is the noise.

Begin with the plainest kind, the absence of sound around you. Real silence is rare now, but you do not need it. A sudden drop in the noise will do: the dishwasher finishing, the road going quiet at night, the office emptying at lunch. When you hear it, listen to it. Do not decide what it means and do not fill it. Just listening to the quiet outside is, on its own, one of the most soothing things you can do, and nobody can see you doing it.

Then notice what happens inside. Listening to the quiet outside tends to bring a quiet inside. You cannot hear inner silence with your ears, and yet you can be aware of it, the way you can be aware of the space in a room without looking at any one object in it. When it comes, something shifts in how the world sounds. The noises are still there, but the labels stop sticking to them. A sound is just a sound, not a nuisance, not a message, not a thing about you.

For one day, try being more silent than talkative. We live on words, and it is easy to get lost in the forest of expressing yourself, even when you know that words are not always the best carriers of what you mean. When the urge to speak arises, say nothing unless it is clearly useful to the moment. Lay aside what you know. Just listen. And notice the people who are already quiet. There is a wordless wisdom in them, whether or not they know it, and they hold a balance in every conversation that the talkers depend on.

The last step is the subtle one. Find out whether there is silence inside the noise. Not after it, not around it, but within it. This takes undivided attention, because the silence in the middle of a full street is very quiet indeed. But it is there, in the same way the sky is behind the clouds, and once you have heard it there, you have found something that no amount of sound can take from you.

None of this asks you to add anything to your life. You are not learning a practice. You are stopping, for a few moments at a time, the one thing that was covering what was already here. Treat silence like a flower whose petals fall at the smallest sound, and it will open on its own.

Questions that arise

How can I find silence when my surroundings are never quiet?

You do not need total silence. Listen for any drop in the noise, and then listen for the silence inside the noise itself. Both are always available once you know to look for them.

Is inner silence the same as an empty mind?

No. Inner silence is what you become aware of when the labels stop sticking to sounds and thoughts. Thoughts may still come. What changes is that they no longer fill everything.

Why does forcing silence not work?

Because the effort is itself a noise. Silence is not made; it is noticed. The more you try to produce it, the more of you there is in the way.

What is the point of speaking less?

Words pull your attention outward and into thought. Speaking only when it is clearly useful leaves room to listen, and listening is where silence is found.

Where this came from

This is the second day of my course 7 Days of Presence. Day one is attention, day two is silence, and the five steps in this essay are that day's guidance, meant to be carried through one ordinary day. The days that follow are acceptance, now, the self, forgiveness and rest. Each has a short teaching, a few points of guidance, a workbook, and an audio version, so you can listen instead of read.

7 Days of Presence costs €37, one time: the ebook, seven daily PDFs, six workbooks and 1 h 20 min of audio. Begin tomorrow morning, or take the week whenever it suits you. The rest of my books are at jussiniittyviita.com.
