An inquiry
Why is there something instead of nothing, and how am I involved in it?
A first-person inquiry into what is actually here once the labels fall away. It begins with a paradise lost and a hall of mirrors, and it ends with two words. For readers already some way in.

Introduction
For a long time I have been fascinated by what we humans commonly call existence: the curious happening in which things appear and disappear in ever smaller and greater cycles. This happening that underlies everything is most often overlooked in human lives, especially in modern societies that thrive on ideas of growth, advancement and continuity. I find it highly peculiar that so few of us ever stop to observe and contemplate our own existence. The matter is typically disregarded and thought to be reserved for scientists, philosophers or spiritual seekers. This forces me to ponder that either we are not as advanced a species as we believe, or we are just confused. I would place my bets on the latter.
I have always been more of a silent, withdrawing and observant kind rather than active and exuberant. Sometimes, over the years, it has been difficult for me to cope in society with all its sound and fury, as well as the pressure to conform and be sociable. Vice versa, it must have been challenging for others to cope with such a silent and introverted person as I have frequently proven to be. I have learned to play by the rules of human society, often at the expense of my inherent nature.
A certain yearning for solitude has been a healing factor in my life, and also, I believe, the major contributor to the books I have written. Quite a lot of time has been spent in this lifetime gazing silently at the dance of a crackling fire, the endless vortices in a river, and trees swaying gently in the wind. When I was a small boy, the stars in the sky were a source of mystical marvels for me: so distant and small, and yet so bright and present.
In my writings I have found myself repeatedly coming back to the same questions that have puzzled philosophers and scientists throughout the ages. Why is there something instead of nothing? How, and to what degree, am I involved in this something?
One could approach these questions through a more common image. What is a leaf to a tree? The leaf might seem separate from the tree, yet it still bears within it the essence of the tree. Likewise, the tree still bears the essence of a seed, and so on, until we stumble upon the essence of nothingness. Correspondingly, I am here inquiring into existence as a leaf of existence. How weird and wonderful is that.
Another way of putting these questions is an inquiry that spontaneously arose one day while strolling in Lapland's wintry forests with my dog. How did I end up here? This question expected no idea of causality as an answer. It had nothing to do with the past or the future, where I came from and where I am going. Instead it dived right into the heart of the present moment.
This is in no way a book you should read in hopes of finding any truth or salvation. Instead, these pages encourage you to commence your own inquiry into reality, which will potentially shake you awake from a dream.
Six chapters, the Silence Experiment, and a last page that ends in two words.
From readers
What readers say
This book offers the most persuasive metaphysical worldview I have read to date. It is the only nonduality book that I have found sensible. His well-reasoned hypothesis is rooted largely, but not entirely, in Big Bang cosmology. No religion, no mysticism, no woo-woo. … This is an important book, and I will read it again and again for a deeper understanding.
I am embarrassed to admit how many nonduality themed books I have read, but this is among my all-time favorites. His writing is clear and compelling. I really enjoy how this book added to my own understanding. Very highly recommended.

Questions
How do I read it?
You get an EPUB and a PDF the moment you pay, by email and on a download page. EPUB opens in Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books and Kindle (send it to your Kindle email). PDF opens anywhere.
Is this a good first book of yours to read?
Probably not. It assumes you have already looked at your own mind a little. If you are new to this, The Sound of the Bells or A Year of Stillness is the gentler door.
Is it philosophy or spirituality?
Neither, quite. It is a first-person inquiry. It uses the language of both where it has to, and it asks you to test everything in your own experience rather than believe it.
What if it is not for me?

The other books
Different doors into the same quiet. Begin anywhere.
The Sound of the Bells
A man is given three months to live, walks out of the hospital and follows a dream to a fishing village, where an old man under a coconut tree asks him one question. A short novel about the end of mind-made suffering, and the peace that was underneath it all along. If you read one of my books, read this one first.
Seeker of Silences
Fifty short contemplations from a silent mind. A few hundred words each, to be read one at a time, when the noise gets loud.
A Year of Stillness
My year in northern Finland, day by day: client meetings, daycare, the night shift, the sauna. Stillness noticed inside an ordinary working life, not apart from it.
I Forgive You
A letter to you. Forgiveness treated not as a duty but as an unexpected key: the moment you stop carrying what was never yours, peace is what remains.
We Were Once Human
Nine chapters, each opening in nature, on what lies past the self we defend. A plain definition of transcendence for people allergic to gurus.
7 Days of Presence
Seven days, seven doors: attention, silence, acceptance, now, the self, forgiveness, rest. A short teaching for each day, questions to sit with, and the whole course read in my own voice.
The Complete Library
All seven books, the seven-day course with its audio, and the audiobooks of A Year of Stillness and Seeker of Silences in my own voice. Everything, for less than the books and course bought one by one.
